ISL Match 10 Day 2 Recap: Lilly King Wins Skins, Dressel Sets Records, Leading Cali Condors to Victory

The International Swimming League (ISL) Meet 10 Day 2 kicked off from Budapest with the Cali Condors leading the LA Current, London Roar and Aqua Centurions. That is the way the meet would finish.

Beryl Gastaldello set multiple French records and won three events for LA. Caeleb Dressel and Abbey Weitzeil broke American records and Eddie Wang broke the world junior record.

Meanwhile, the Condors, led by Dressel and Olivia Smoliga, built their lead and Lilly King sealed the victory with a win in the breaststroke skins.

Day 1 recap

Women’s 100 Free

LA Current went 1-2 to lead off the second day of Meet 10 as Beryl Gastaldello won the 100 free in 51.16, to break the French record.

Abbey Weitzeil was second in an American record (51.26), breaking Mallory Comerford‘s 51.63.

London’s Freya Anderson was third.

“I am excited because I think I can get so much better,” Gastaldello said in a post-race interview. “It is going to only get better.”

Men’s 100 Free

Cali’s Caeleb Dressel won the 100 free in 45.56 to hold off the field and go 1-3 with teammate Justin Ress.

Aqua Centurions’ Alessandro Miressi was third.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Cali made it two wins in a row as Hali Flickinger won the 200 butterfly. She jumped out to a big lead and held it steady the rest of the way to touch the wall in 2:04.36. Flickinger stole 10 points on the jackpot time.

LA Current’s Helena Gasson was second, followed by London’s Emily Large.

“I feel like I am getting stronger as this camp goes,” Flickinger said.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

LA Current’s Tom Shields held off Cali’s Eddie Wang in the final meters to win the 200 butterfly.

Shields touched the wall in 1:49.78, the first swim under 1:50.

Wang broke the world junior record in the event and London’s Vini Lanza was third.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

Cali’s Olivia Smoliga won the 100 backstroke for the fifth time in her ISL career, using a late surge to hold off London Road’s Kira Toussaint.

Smoliga touched the wall in 55.92 and earned 15 points for the Condors.

Toussaint was second, followed by Cali’s Erika Brown.

“It was a great race. (Kira) is an awesome competitor. I am excited to see how we do in semis and finals,” Smoliga said.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

LA’s Ryan Murphy won the 100 backstroke in a tight race with teammate Dylan Carter. Murphy won the race in 49.93 in a race where three tenths separated the top five competitors.

Carter was second, holding off Cali’s Radoslaw Kawecki.

Women’s 100 IM

LA Current’s Beryl Gastaldello earned her second win of the day, touching the wall in 57.43 in the 100 IM.

She went 1-2 with teammate Anastasia Gorbenko for a huge Current points haul.

Cali’s Beata Nelson finished third.

Men’s 100 IM

Caeleb Dressel broke the American record in the 100 IM to win in 50.48.

He led a 1-2 Cali Condors finish with Marcin Cieslak.

LA’s Tomoe Hvas finished third.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

Freya Anderson of the London Roar held off two Olympic champions and a strong field to win the 200 freestyle and give the Roar their first win of the day.

Anderson touched the wall in 1:52.82.

“It is nice to have it back to back (in the ISL) and try different race patterns,” Anderson said.

LA’s Andi Murez finished second, followed by Cali’s Allison Schmitt.

Aqua Centurions’ Federica Pellegrini, who returned for this meet after battling COVID-19, finished fourth.

Men’s 200 Freestyle

Cali’s Townley Haas won the 200 free in 1:41.84, holding off the field.

London’s Mikhail Vekovischev was second, followed by LA’s Fernando Scheffer.

Women’s 50 Butterfly

LA’s Beryl Gastaldello continued to dominate, winning her third event of the day. She won the 50 fly in 25.30, leading a 1-2 finish with teammate Alyssa Marsh.

Cali’s Kelsi Dahlia finished third.

Men’s 50 Butterfly

Aqua’s Szebasztian Szabo won the 50 butterfly from lane one to hold off the Cali Condors.

Szabo finished in 21.86.

Cali’s Caeleb Dressel was second, followed by teammate Marcin Cieslak. Dressel tied the American record in 22.06.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Cali’s Lilly King won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.15, holding off a strong field after being edged in two races in Day 1.

London’s Alia Atkinson took second, followed by Aqua’s Martina Carraro.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Aqua went 1-2 in the men’s breaststroke as Nicolo Martinenghi (56.46) won the race ahead of teammate Fabio Scozzoli.

LA’s Felipe Silva Franca was third.

Mixed 4×100 Freestyle Relay

The Cali Condors jumped out on an early lead in the 4×100 freestyle relay behind Justin Ress, Caeleb Dressel. Olivia Smoliga kept the lead heading into the anchor leg by Erika Brown.

The Condors finished in 3:16.14.

LA Current’s Abbey Weitzeil pulled the team to second with a stellar anchor leg.

The London Roar finished third.

Women’s 400 IM

London’s Syndey Pickrem won the 400 IM in 4:25.90, well ahead of the field.

Cali’s Hali Flickinger was second, followed by London’s Aimee Willmott.

“I feel good about it,” Pickrem said. “It is good to get that momentum going into the semifinals.”

Men’s 400 IM

London’s Duncan Scott had a big lead in the 400 IM but had to hold off a late charge in the freestyle to earn the win. He finished in 4:07.88.

Aqua’s Philip Heintz finished second ahead of LA’s Jacob Heidtmann.
