IOC Earns United Nations Award

SINGAPORE, February 1. THE United Nations Environment Program has honored Jacques Rogge, the President of the International Olympic Committee, as a Champion of Earth for 2007. Rogge and the IOC will be recognized April 19 for their efforts to make sure the Olympic Games, obviously a massive event, have as minimal a negative impact on the environment as possible.

"The opportunity of the Games can also be used to provide sustainable environmental legacies, such as rehabilitated and revitalized sites, increased environmental awareness, and improved environmental policies and practices," an IOC statement said. "They can further encourage and facilitate strong environmental actions, and technology and product development in a city, country and beyond, through the educational value of good example."
