Inside With Brett Hawke: Podcast Sheds Light on Career of Geoff Huegill

Geoff Huegill

In the latest episode of his popular podcast, Inside with Brett Hawke, the Australian Olympian enjoys a chat with Geoff Huegill, his former teammate on several international squads. Hawke and Huegill discuss a variety of topics that focus on what unfolded in the pool and also chat about a number of issues away from the water.

Huegill, nicknamed Skip, enjoyed a superb career, as he established himself as one of the world’s elite performers in the 50 and 100 butterfly events. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Huegill claimed the bronze medal in the 100 butterfly, finishing behind Sweden’s Lars Frolander and countryman Michael Klim. In earning a place on the podium, Huegill fended off American Ian Crocker, who was a rising star on his way to his freshman year at the University of Texas.

Huegill is also well known for putting together an epic comeback that saw him capture the gold medal in the 100 butterfly at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. That performance featured a personal-best clocking of 51.69, and Huegill also helped Australia win the gold medal in the 400 medley relay. Those efforts came nine years after he was crowned world champion in the 50 butterfly.

In the podcast, Hawke and Huegill discuss Australian coach Don Talbot, witnessing an extraordinary practice effort from Ian Thorpe in the 200 freestyle and share memories of their international trips as members of Australian National Team.

Hawke’s interview with Huegill is the 34th episode of his podcast, which offers interviews and honest discussions with athletes about their careers and what they have experienced in the sport. Previous episodes have featured discussions with the likes of Michael Klim, David Marsh and Roland Schoeman. A complete archive of the podcasts are available on Hawke’s YouTube Channel.

Next week, Hawke has an interview scheduled with Darian Townsend, a member of South Africa’s gold-medal-winning 400 freestyle relay from the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
