Industry News: Dan Stephenson Earning Kudos for “The Underwater Window” Novel

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, December 20. EARLIER this year, Masters swimmer Dan Stephenson's debut novel, The Underwater Window, was released by digital publisher Untreed Reads. A paperback edition is available as well. The novel has earned kudos from Rowdy Gaines and Janet Evans Willson, among others.

The Underwater Window is set in the world of top tier competitive swimming and is about a 24 year old swimmer named Doyle Wilson, who has one last shot at the Olympics. He has deferred medical school, put a relationship on hold, and even turned down the perfect job, all for one last shot at the gold. But he's up against his best friend, Archie, who is also his nemesis. Doyle struggles to be the best swimmer he can be. For Archie, success in the pool has always come easily. Doyle's dream is within reach, but will his friendship with Archie survive? How much is Doyle willing to sacrifice for glory?

Dan Stephenson was an All-American swimmer at UCLA, where he captained the swim team and was a Pac-10 champion. He competed in the 1976 Olympic Trials and in 1978 was ranked fifth in the world in the 200-meter freestyle. He was training for the 1980 Olympic Trials when the U.S. boycott was announced, and he retired.

After graduating from UCLA, Stephenson attended University of Michigan School of Law. He then joined Dykema Gossett, a large law firm based in Michigan. Now he serves as Director of Dykema Gossett's 180-lawyer Litigation Department in Los Angeles. He has handled complex trials and appeals for 30 years and been ranked by his peers in both Michigan and California as a “Super Lawyer,” an annual listing of outstanding American lawyers.

In 1986, Stephenson began swimming Masters competitions and has since set ten world records. He was named a World Masters Swimmer of the Year in 2008 and currently holds two world records in the 200 and 400-meter Freestyle in the 50-54 age group. In June 2012, he competed in the Masters World Championships in Riccione, Italy, winning gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400 meter Freestyle and the 200 Individual Medley. Recently he was named the Masters Swimmer of the Year for Southern California.
