Industry News: Bluegrass Mountain Conference Launches New Website

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina, June 25. THE Bluegrass Mountain Conference, a unique collegiate swimming conference composed of 14 institutions from Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia continues its growth with the release of their new conference website.

With the entire conference being coach run, it is quite remarkable to a great extent the conference has developed and grown the way it has. Established in 2000, the conference has grown in size and level of competitive play each year since. The unique conference provides an opportunity for colleges in conferences lacking adequate Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving programs to compete. The Bluegrass Mountain Conference offers swimmers at these institutions full competitive seasons and the chance at team and individual conference honors.

Conference President and head coach of Queens University of Charlotte Jeff Dugdale commented, “The Bluegrass Mountain Conference is unique in the fact that it is coach run. Every program has a vested interest and like minded attitude to contribute to an environment that produces fun, fast swimming. In a time were DI schools are dropping programs the country is seeing DII thrive with the addition of teams.”

The conference consists of 10 division II institutions, 3 Division III colleges, and 1 NAIA school for a total of 14 women's teams and 13 men's teams. This past season saw the conference's Division II programs send a combined 12 women and 16 men to compete at the national level, with 27 of the 28 athletes scoring. The conference's Division III programs had a total of 10 women and 15 men competing at their division's nationals with 19 scoring at the meet. Finally, SCAD had 13 swimmers earn All-American honors at the NAIA national championships with swimmers setting two new national records.

This year, the strength of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference will be well represented internationally, with seven conference athletes competing at Team USA's Olympic trials, and Marko Blazevski (Skopje, Macedonia) competing at London's 2012 Summer Olympics for his home nation of Macedonia.

Corey White, the head swim coach for Converse College, took the opportunity to oversee the development and release of the new conference website. White has stated, “The primary goal of the website is to promote and aid the conference in reaching its maximum potential, and raise the standard of swimming throughout the region”

White sees the website as just one indicator of the conference's growing presence in world of collegiate swimming.

With its promising advances, the Bluegrass Mountain Conference has landed sponsorships from Paddock Pool Equipment Co., Inc., Paddock Evacuator Company, and Marriott hotels, ensuring that the conference continues to run the highest quality of competition meets for its swim programs. This past year Paddock introduced their new wedge blocks with hand rails into conference meets, making it one of a select few in collegiate competition to have the latest FINA approved equipment.
