Indiana vs. Purdue Women

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, January 24. INDIANA was victorious in every event en route to a 210-159 dual meet victory over Purdue Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. With the win Indiana picks up another point in the Crimson and Gold Cup competition.

The team of Kate Zubkova, Sarah Stockwell, Donna Smailis and Allison Kay easily took the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.74. Kristin Cihoski, Abby Cooper, Brittany Barwegen and Amanda Smith took second (1:45.76).

Cassie Luhrsen won the 1000 free in a season best time of 10:04.31. Brittany Strumbel was second in 10:05.56, also a season best. Ashley Kranz cut more than 15 seconds off her season best with a time of 10:25.77 to finish fifth.

Margaux Farrell too the 200 free in a time of 1:50.90, just three tenths of a second off her season best. Amanda Smith was second (1:51.15) and Nikki White fourth (1:51.69). Ashley Jones rounded out the top five with a time of 1:52.42, a season best.

Zubkova kept her unbeaten streak in the 100 backstroke in tact with a time of 54.22. Cihoski placed third in 57.93, followed by Kim Tracey (58.25).

Cooper was the winner of the 100 breaststroke, coming home in 1:03.94. She was followed by Amilee Smith in second (1:05.77). Alyssa Vavra finished in the top five with a fifth-place time of 1:08.10. It was Barwegen taking the 200 butterfly in 2:00.39. Kay was second with a time of 2:03.06, with Laura Head fifth (2:13.47).

Farrell also took the 50 free with a time of 23.54, the second-fastest time by a Hoosier this season. Smailis placed third (23.88) and Strumbel fourth (24.02). Strumbel won the 100 free in 51.16, with Zubkova fourth in 52.72. Courey Schaefer cracked the top five with her time of 52.74. Smailis won the 200 back in 2:02.40, with Jones second (2:02.91). Farrell placed fourth in 2:04.62.

Stockwell added a victory in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.38. Amilee Smith was second (2:18.65) and Vavra fourth (2:24.48). Nikki White took the 500 free in 4:55.62, followed by Luhrsen in third (5:00.50) and Schaefer fourth (5:04.94).

Amanda Smith was the winner of the 100 butterfly (56.18), with Kay second (57.10) and Cihoski third (58.04). Indiana went 1-2-3- in the 200 individual medley, led by Jones' winning time of 2:05.14. Cooper was second (2:05.62), Cihoski third (2:08.10) and Stockwell fifth (2:09.09). Amilee Smith went a season best 2:05.70 in an exhibition heat.

The swimming events wrapped up with the 400 freestyle relay with Smailis, Farrell, Zubkova and Kay posting a winning time of 3:26.94. Brittany Strumbel, Amanda Smith, White and Schaefer were second (3:30.65).

Competing in her final collegiate event at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, senior Christina Loukas won the three-meter springboard competition by more than 70 points with a score of 381.15. Brittney Feldman was second with a 310.28-point total, followed by Christina Kouklakis in fourth (294.38). Feldman and Gabby Agostino tied for third on the platform with a total of 235.05. Amy Korthauer was fifth (227.18), with Kouklakis sixth (217.20) and Nicole Brehm seventh (194.70).

Indiana does not return to action until the Big Ten Championships, Feb. 19-21 at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
