Illinois vs. Akron

AKRON, Ohio, October 16. THE University of Akron swimming and diving team was defeated by Illinois, 154-89, Saturday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium.

Sophomore Rebecca Zimmer was a double winner in the meet for the Zips, taking victories in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,000-yard freestyle in times of 5:03.83 and 10:26.35. Zimmer led from start to finish in both races.

Katie Miles also contributed a victory for UA, winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 52.24. Miles also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle.

Freshman Catherine Carr tallied a pair of runner-up finishes, taking second in both the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley.

The Zips swept the top three spots on the three-meter springboard. Senior Amanda Angeloff won the event with a six-dive score of 268.08, while freshman Carla McNamara and junior Leeanna Hoover took second and third.

McNamara was also the runner-up in the one-meter diving competition, while Hoover, Jayne Malloy, and Angeloff took third through fifth.

UA is back in action next Friday night, when they host Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. in Ocasek Natatorium.
