Illinois State Dismantles Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Missouri, October 19. ON Friday night, Illinois State was a rude visitor, taking it to Truman State with a 138-64 triumph over the NCAA Division II opponent.

The 400-yard medley team, made up of freshman Rachel Root, sophomore Courtney Taylor, juniors Lexi Nash and Katherine Nelson earned first-place (3:57.36) followed by junior Samantha Schuckles, senior April Livingston, freshmen Kristin Verkler and Yvette Kruk taking second (4:01.05). The Redbirds proceeded this event with swimmers junior Cecilia Holmes earning first-place in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:30.26), junior Valerie Jones earning second-place (10:36.82) and junior Keely Hunt earning third-place (10:52.00) in the 1000-yard freestyle. The 200-yard freestyle team also took first-place (1:36.65) including junior Marissa Yontz, freshman Claire Haggerty, senior Erica Halley and Nelson.

Head Coach Steve Paska is impressed with the student-athletes performance at Truman State.
“During our team meeting we said the team needed to gain momentum at the start of the meet and we did that,” said Paska. “The 400-yard medley and 1000-yard medley got us off to a great start and helped build momentum for the rest of the races. I wanted our swimmers to compete in their main events Friday. We have been taking every opportunity to race and improve. Tonight every swimmer top to bottom has something to be proud of.”

A number of student-athletes competed at high level earning first-place in multiple events. Holmes also earned first-place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.84). Yontz earned first-place in the 100-yard freestyle (52.47). Root earned first-place in the 100-yard backstroke (59.75). Nash took first-place in the 100-yard butterfly (57.97). “This meet was a great way to kick off the dual meets for this season. We are going to work to keep improving each week this season,” said Paska.

The first B-cut time of the season and a clean sweep in the 100 Breaststroke highlighted the Truman women’s swimming team’s dual against Div. I Illinois State University on Friday night in the Pershing Natatorium.

The Bulldogs and Redbirds squared off in the 11-event meet, with ISU finishing with a 138-64 victory in the team scoring. Evyn Spencer, already named a GLVC women’s swimmer of the week following her performance at the season-opening Mizzou Show-Me Showdown, logged Truman’s first NCAA B-cut time of the season during Friday’s dual by touching the wall in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.61.

Abby Hempen (1:06.92), Margaux Kent (1:07.78) and Morgan Foxworthy (1:14.29) combined to add 16 points to the Bulldogs’ score in the 100 Breaststroke, as the trio brought in the top three scoring times in the event.

The Bulldogs return to the pool on Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon, facing in-state rival Lindenwood.
