Illinois-Chicago Signs 11 Recruits

CHICAGO, Illinois, November 28. UIC Head Swimming & Diving Coach Paul Moniak announced on Monday that he has signed 11 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to compete for the Flames beginning in the 2007-08 campaign.

Evan Dunn (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North H.S.), Thomas Groark (Chicago, Ill./Oak Lawn Community H.S.), Kevin Linsley (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay H.S.), Alex Pawlus (Lake Forest, Ill./Stevenson H.S.), Andrew Schmitt (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) and Steve Yemm (Sterling, Ill./Sterling H.S.) signed up for the men, while Emily Hare (Homer Glen, Ill./Rosary Academy), Kelly Hashoian (Brookfield, Ill./Arrowhead H.S.), Sonia Peterson (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles North H.S.), Brooke Sawyer (Muskego, Wis./Muskego H.S.) and Julia Shallcross (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago H.S.) joined the women's team.

"The team and coaching staff made a concerted effort to have a successful November signing period," said Moniak. "This proved to be the most successful early [signing] period in recent memory. We feel this gives us significant momentum for the April signing period."

Dunn earned two Oklahoma state titles as a junior last season, winning the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard IM. He was Edmond North High School's 2006 Swimmer of the Year. He swims at the club level for Extreme Aquatic Team.

Groark is a two-time defending SICA North Conference diving champion for Oak Lawn and a 2006 IHSA state championship qualifier.

A 2006 High School All-American as a breaststroke and IM specialist at Whitefish Bay High School, Linsley also qualified for the 2006 USA Swimming Junior Nationals. He competes for the North Shore Swimming Club and is an honor student at Whitefish Bay.

Pawlus has qualified for the last two IHSA state championship meets for Stevenson High School, where he has already become a varsity record holder. He is an AAU National Championship qualifier who competes for the Windy City Diving Club.

Schmitt earned IHSA All-State Honorable Mention honors swimming the butterfly events for Glenbrook South High School, where he is an honor roll student. Like Linsley, Schmitt swims for the North Shore Spartans Swim Club.

Yemm qualified for the 2006 IHSA State Championships for Sterling High School, where he swam sprint-freestyle and butterfly. He is currently serving as the school's team captain. Yemm also swims on the club level for the Sterling Stingrays Swim Club.

Emily Hare will become the fifth member of the Hare family to swim for head coach Paul Moniak and the Flames, joining older sister Christine and big brothers Bill, Dan and Mike. The freestyle specialist and honor roll student out of Aurora's Rosary Academy was a 2005 IHSA All-State honoree. Hare swims for the Academy Bullets Swim Club, competing for club's national team.

Hashioan is a two-time WIAA All-State honoree and a High School All-American as a freestyler for Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wis. The Brookfield, Wis. native swims for the Lake Country Swim Club, competing for the club's national team.

Peterson is a diver for Niles North High School, where she qualified for the IHSA State Championships the last two seasons.

Sawyer is a two-time WIAA All-State selection and High School All-American for Muskego High School. A versatile swimmer who excels in the sprint-freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events, Sawyer also swims for the Southwest Aquatic Team.

Shallcross qualified for the 2006 IHSA State Championships last season, posting top times in the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke. She is a high honor roll student and National Honor Society member at West Chicago High School, the same school that current UIC standout Emily Biancalana attended. Shallcross also swims on the club level for the West Chicago Sharks.
