Husky Men Win Only Home Meet

SEATTLE, Washington, January 27. THE University of Washington men's swimming team (2-3) made the most of its only home meet of the season, defeating a combined Seattle University and Simon Fraser squad, 112-82. The Huskies won eight of the first nine events before swimming the last two races exhibition.

The meet marked the final home appearances for Husky seniors Jared Osborne and Cejih Yung. Osborne went out on a high note, swimming the lead-off leg of the winning 200 medley relay. He teamed up with Yonatan Cohen, Erez Fern and David Bai to take the event in a time of 1:34.95.

The Huskies swept the competition in the next event as freshman Jereme Barnett-Woods posted a career-best time in the 1000 freestyle to win the event in a time of 9:37.24. The time was more than six seconds faster than his previous best time. Sophomore Scott Spansail placed second in the race (9:43.00) and Hunter Barrett place third in a career-best time of 9:47.00.

Seattle University's Gordon Smith won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.68, just out-touching UW junior Bret Lundgaard who placed second with a time of 1:43.90.

Junior Ivan Perhat, one of three Washington double event winners, picked up his first victory in the 50 freestyle. He touched the wall first in a time of 20.83, marking the fastest time of the season for any Husky,

Jonathan Banker kept the Husky train rolling, winning his first of two events with a time of 1:57.14 in the 200 individual medley.

The Huskies also placed 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly, with Fern winning the event in a season-best time of 50.45. Osborne placed second with a time of 50.57 and Mason Amick was third with a time of 51.25.

Perhat and Brenton Dowdy continued Washington's winning ways in the 100 freestyle as Perhat won the event in a time of 20.83 and Dowdy placed second with a time of 46.91.

Banker earned his second victory of the night in the 100 backstroke with a lifetime best mark of 52.55.

Barnett-Woods won his second event with a time of 4:39.82 in the 500 freestyle as the Huskies rolled to victory.

Simon Fraser's Sean Nugent won the 100 breast in a time of 58.20 and SU's Chris Coley, Luke Armstrong, Mike Kirkness and Andrew Miron won the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.87) to close out the meet.

Washington fans can watch the UW women in action Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Huskies take on Pac-10 foe Oregon State in the team's only home meet of the season. The meet will mark the last home appearance for senior Blythe Murray.

The UW men will have a few weeks to get ready for the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Feb. 21-24.
