Houston, Rice, Tulane vs. LSU

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, January 28. THE No. 23 LSU women's swimming and diving team won five of 10 events to take comfortable leads over Houston, Rice and Tulane Friday during the first session of a two-day quadruple meet in the LSU Natatorium.

The Lady Tigers (10-4) hold a 21-point advantage over the Cougars (110-89) and will go into Day 2 with leads of 149-44 and 132-53 over the Green Wave and Owls, respectively.

Saturday's action is slated to begin at 11 a.m. (CST). The venue is located at the corner of Nicholson Drive and West Chimes Street next to the Carl Maddox Field House and practice tennis courts. Admission is free.

LSU swept the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays and received victories from senior Jane Trepp, sophomore Jana Ruimerman and freshman Emily Weaner.

The 200 medley foursome of Samantha Goates, Kannon Betzen, Cari Blalock and Trepp swam to a victorious mark of 1 minute, 44.80 seconds, while the 400 free group of Trepp, Rainey White, Betzen and Goates closed out the session with a winning time of 3:28.52.

Trepp remained undefeated on the season in the 50 freestyle with a 23.23 clocking and also recorded second in a rare appearance in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.54). Ruimerman raced to victory in the 100 backstroke (57.52).

Weaner spearheaded a 1-2-3 LSU finish in the 100 butterfly with a season best of 56.03. Fellow freshmen White and Andi Staub took second and third, respectively.

In diving, sophomore Elle Schmidt registered third-place in both springboard events.
