Houghton Girls, Marquette Boys Win Michigan Upper Peninsula High School Titles

The Houghton High School girls and the Marquette boys won the Michigan Upper Peninsula High School swimming state championships this weekend.

The Marquette girls won the 200 medley relay in 1:58.68 with the team of Jayme WinnLauren RotundoPaige Whaley, and Taryn Aho. Their teammates Andrew KilpelaMatthew NykanenBen Luke, and Ryan Glover won the boys event in 1:42.44. Aho won the 200 IM in 2:23.33. She was later one of three swimmers under six minutes with a winning 500 time of 5:30.83.

Houghton sophomore Samantha Olson edged Marquette freshman Paige Whaley 2:07.05 to 2:07.51 to win the 200 freestyle. Sault Area High School freshman Andrew Innerebner destroyed the field en route to a pool record 1:46.36 in the boys event. His teammate Leevi Olson won the 50 freestyle with a 22.28. Innerebner was on top again with a 49.55 100 freestyle.

Gladstone senior Matthew LeClaire won the 200 IM in 2:07.78. In one of the closest races of the meet, two boys were under the 100 backstroke pool record. LeClaire got to the wall first in 53.64. Kilepa was also under the mark in 54.10.

Rudyard High School’s Trista MacDowell captured the 50 freestyle title in 25.16, just faster than Winn in 25.92. Winn then won the 100 in 56.79. MacDowell won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.00.

Houghton’s Tessa Meyer dominated the girls 100 butterfly in 1:06.38. The boys event went to her teammate Peter Jasczak with a 56.56.

Caleb Plumley of Kingsford High School won the boys 500 in 5:13.54.

The Marquette quarter of girls was victorious in the 200 freestyle relay as well with a 1:47.11. Their teammates also claimed the boys event with a state pool time of 1:30.97.

Sydney Herioux edged her Gladstone teamamte Kirsten Williams 1:12.20 to 1:12.66 for the 100 breaststroke title. Olson then won for the men in 1:01.39.

The Houghton girls then wrapped up the meet with a 400 freestyle relay time of 3:58.42 with the team of Arayia HolomboJustine RaTessa Meyer, and Samantha Olson. Sault Area’s Innerebner, Drake PerezChristopher Larson, and Olson then won for the boys in 3:28.12.
