Horner Wins Two Golds at Speedo East Canadian Nationals

MONTREAL, Canada, February 17. STEPHANIE Horner of Beaconsfield, Que., won gold medals in the women's 200 meter individual medley and 400 freestyle on Friday at the Speedo East Nationals short course swimming competition.

In the 200 IM, Horner clocked 2:14.56 with Commonwealth Games team member Marie-Pier Couillard of Levis, Que., second in 2:15.21 and Alexa Komarnycky of Etobicoke, Ont., third in 2:16.56.

"Marie-Pier and I were in a dead heat going into the freestyle," said Horner, 17. "At that point I just remember my coach telling me I had to finish as strong in the freestyle as I started on the opening butterfly. I just went as hard as I could."

In the 400 freestyle, Horner prevailed again in 4:11.40 with Zsofia Balazs of Toronto second in 4:13.08 and Komarnycky third in 4:13.33.

"I wanted to get into the 4:10 range but I was still pleased in general with the race," said Horner. "It's a good sign for the Pan Am Games trials. I'm not fully prepared for this meet however I still want to go out and win these races. That's my goal."

Gabrielle Soucisse notched a third gold for the Beaconsfield Bluefins Club placing first in the 100 backstroke. Sandrine Mainville of Beauport, Que., won the 50 butterfly and Laura Pomeroy of Toronto the 50 freestyle.

In men's competition, two-time Olympian Andrew Hurd of Toronto, currently tuning up for next month's world championships in Australia, won his second gold in two days with a victory in the 400 freestyle in 3:47.53. Francesco Zuccaro of Etobicoke, Ont., was second in 3:48.24 and Ivan Lopez of Montreal third. Hurd also won the 800 freestyle on Thursday.

Montreal area swimmers won the other individual events in men's competition. Thomas Kindler and Nicolas Bovell, both from Montreal's CNPPO club took the 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke respectively, Octavian Petre of Montreal's CAMO Club won the 50 freestyle and Tobias Oriwol of the Pointe-Claire Swim Club won the 200 IM.

CNPPO also won both relay finals.
