High School State Championships: CIF Central Section Divisions 1 and 2 Boys and Girls

FRESNO AND PORTERVILLE, California, May 23. CLOVIS West swept the Division 1 titles, and Clovis North claimed both titles in Division 2 competition at the CIF Central Sectional Championships. The Division 1 meet was held May 17-19 in Fresno, and the Division 2 swimmers met in Porterville May 16-19.

Division 1
Clovis West was led in its winning effort by two double-event champions. Sophomore Mary Brooks posted winning times in both the 50 and 100 free (23.87 and 52.02), and junior McKenna Fife was tops in the 200 IM (2:09.47) and 100 back (59.19). Fife and Brooks were joined by sophomore Ali Alving-Trinh and junior Meghan Moebes in the victorious Clovis West 400 free relay (3:38.83).

In all, Clovis West scored 324.5 points. Clovis and Sanger tied for second with 273 points each. Buchanan came in fourth with 259.5, and Centennial rounded out the top five with their 185-point total.

Sanger had several swimmers place in the top three in their events, and claimed the 200 medley and 200 free relays. The all-senior squad of Mikayla Mangrum, Haley Washburn, Leah Hatayama and Amanda Imfeld combined for a 1:51.65 in the 200 medley relay; freshman Emily Imfeld led off the 200 free relay with Amanda Imfeld, Washburn and Hatayama for a 1:39.24 win.

Hannah Harvey, a junior at Clovis, finished first in the 200 free (1:56.22). Two Frontier swimmers–sophomore Jorie Caneta (100 breast, 1:04.43) and junior Chandler Bullman (100 fly, 59.42)–also were event champions. Buchanan sophomore Courtney Chacon was tops in the 500 free (5:08.22), and Lucy LaFranchise, a junior at Liberty, was the top diver with her 429.05 points.

The Clovis West boys squad racked up 499 points, ahead of Buchanan (298), Clovis (261) and Sanger (152). Centennial and Liberty tied for the fifth spot with 140 points each.

Clovis West swept the relay events. Junior Ting Williams, senior Jordan Capper, sophomore Justin Wright and senior Elijah Barrows touched first in the 200 medley relay (1:36.66). An all-senior team of Brock Ivancovich, Tommy Allen, Barrows and Matt Bilello cruised to 1:25.19 in the 200 free relay. Ivancovich, Allen, Wright and Bilello ended the meet with a 3:05.17 win in the 400 free relay.

Individual titles were earned by Clovis' Bilello in the 100 and 200 free (45.75 and 1:38.53), Allen in the 500 free (4:35.92) and Wright in the 100 fly (49.74).

Hanaya Brasali, a senior at Bullard, closed out his career with wins in both the 100 back (52.89) and 200 IM (1:53.30). Other wins were claimed by seniors Zach Larimore of Buchanan (50 free, 21.40), Nick Treiberg from Centennial (100 breast, 57.50) and Jacob Ruiz of Clovis East (1-meter diving, 475.25).

Division 2
Clovis North dominated the competition in both the girls and boys races. The girls squad scored 418 points to Kingsburg's 234, Hanford West's 177, Exeter Union's 153 and Edison's 131. In the boys competition, Clovis North put together 329 points for first. Highland was second (206), followed by Central Valley Christian (159), Tulare Union (154) and Edison (148).

Clovis North freshman Hunter Winslow posted the only winning individual swim for her team with a 1:57.11 in the 200 free, just ahead of Kingsburg freshman Katelyn Herrera (1:57.27). The two girls switched places in the 500 free, with Herrera first in 5:11.78 and Winslow runner-up in 5:30.57.

In another 1-2 switch of event wins, Dagmar Gudmundsson took first in the 50 free (23.99) to runner-up Taylor Solorio, a junior at Highland (24.39). Solorio's 52.24 in the 100 free put her ahead of Gudmundsson's effort of 53.22.

Herrera's classmate at Kingsburg, Emily Goodbar, came from behind in the 100 fly to touch out Clovis North junior Katelyn Rhodes, 1:01.09-1:01.14. Earlier in the meet, the two finished 1-2 in the 200 IM with Goodbar out-swimming Rhodes 2:14.27-2:16.04.

Haley Hopper, a sophomore at Exeter, was victorious in the 100 back (1:00.61). Edison freshman Lauren Davis stroked to a first place 1:08.49 in the 100 breast. The diving event went to Taft junior Melissa Gore (375.85 points).

Clovis North's team of freshman Makenna La Blue, senior Christine Miller plus juniors Rhodes and Ashley Wilcox, combined for a 1:56.18 win in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Katelyn Fairchild led off the winning 200 free relay of La Blue, Wilcox and junior Ashley Sagouspe for Clovis North (1:43.74). Kingsburg out-touched Clovis North for the top spot in the 400 free relay, 3:41.38-3:41.53, with the quartet of sophomore Bre Abell, freshman Raven Landseadal, Herrera and Goodbar.

Junior Connor Kennedy was the only individual event champion for Clovis North with his wins in the 50 and 100 free (21.74-48.01). Kennedy also anchored both of Clovis North's winning freestyle relays. Classmates Colton Privett and Keone Carrigan joined sophomore Jacob Federico for a 1:29.27 in the 200 free; senior Shae Russell replaced Privett on the 400 free relay which posted a 3:16.62.

Cocoran sophomore Chris Nolan enjoyed victory in both the 500 free (4:42.39) and 100 fly (51.37). Nathan Rhea, a junior at Tulare Western, also picked up two event titles with his 1:00.29 in the 100 breast and 1:55.97 in the 200 IM.

Single-event champions included Wesley Kudela, a senior at Yosemite (200 free, 1:45.29); Highland sophomore Aiden Pike (100 back, 52.27); and Exeter junior Roderick Burkett (diving, 357.40 points). Pike led off the winning Highland 200 medley relay team with juniors Bryan Bumgarner and Chance Marchini, plus senior James Beeghly (1:40.14).
