Hawkeyes Defeat Cyclones

IOWA CITY, Iowa, December 8. THE University of Iowa women's swimming and diving team defeated intrastate rival, the Iowa State Cyclones, winning 10 of the 16 events to win in a score of 181.5-117.5. The Hawkeyes record now stands at 5-5 (0-3 Big Ten). The win gives the Hawkeyes three straight wins over the Cyclones, and 11 of the last 13 in the series.

Sophomore Ashley Dell started off the night for the Hawkeyes with wins in the 1,000 (10:20.96) and 500 freestyle (5:06.97). Fellow sophomore Alison Gschwend picked up two wins in the 100 (57.55) and 200 backstroke (2:06.43), and freshman Margie Chamberlin added two wins in the 100 (57.92) and 200 butterfly (2:06.43).

"This was a great win over an in-state rival. We worked hard and got the victory over a good Iowa State team" said Head Coach Marc Long.

Iowa won 10 of the 16 events on the night. Senior Emmy Haeger (100 breast – 1:04.66) and freshman Christine Kuczek (50 free – 24.32) each added another win for the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes will have a break for finals and the holidays before they travel to Miami for their annual winter training trip, January 2-13. While in Miami, the Hawkeyes will compete at the Golden Panther Invitational, hosted by Florida International, on January 6.
