Hampden-Sydney College Adds Men’s Swimming

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Virginia, October 29. COLLEGE President Dr. Chris Howard and Athletic Director Richard Epperson announced today the addition of men's swimming to the list of NCAA sponsored sports at Hampden-Sydney College. With men's swimming, the Tigers now feature nine NCAA Division III sports.

"The Hampden-Sydney College Athletic Department is excited to announce the addition of swimming as an intercollegiate sport offering," said Epperson. "We are confident that his program will immediately enhance our institutional retention and recruitment objectives for current and prospective student-athletes."

The addition of men's swimming is effective immediately with the Tigers beginning competition this season. The 14-man roster has already begun training and will likely swim in meets at Washington & Lee and Randolph-Macon this season.

Epperson named Betsy Prengaman the first head coach of Hampden-Sydney swimming. Prengaman also serves as the cross country coach and assistant fitness director. In addition, she serves as the cross country, track and field, and swimming coach at local Fuqua School.

"Coach Prengaman is well qualified to lead this initiative," Epperson said of the new coach. "We have a tremendous core group of men in place all eager to compete."

"This is an exciting addition to the College, and I am honored to be a part of it," announced Prengaman. "I have full confidence in these 14 athletes in this undertaking, and I know they will make us all proud as representatives of Hampden-Sydney.

"The team and I appreciate all of the support that we have already received from our campus, the local community, area colleges, and some knowledgeable and helpful professionals in the national swimming associations," Prengaman added. "I look forward to coaching our brand new swim team to an outstanding season and many more to come. Go Tigers!"

Leggett Pool in Kirby Fieldhouse will be home to Tiger swimming.
