Guilford vs. Hollins

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, January 23. DAPHNE Murphy won both distance freestyle events in her first meet of the season to lead Guilford College's swimming team to an 82-75 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Hollins University Friday night.

Daphne MurphyMurphy (left), who missed the fall semester while studying abroad, took the 800-meter freestyle in 12:30.81 and later defeated teammate Cristen Kennedy to win the 400 freestyle in 6:08.81. She also swam on Guilford's uncontested 200 freestyle relay team, which competed as an exhibition.

Hollins' Cortney Phillips won back-to-back events, which pulled the visitors to within 69-63 with three events to swim. Murphy and Kennedy went 1-2 in the 400 freestyle, which clinched the win for the Quakers (3-3, 2-2 ODAC). Shannon Haluszczak won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly for Hollins (3-2, 2-2 ODAC).

Guilford's Justine Merritt won the 200 individual medley in 2:50.22 and swam the second leg of the Quakers' winning 200 medley relay. Her winning time in the 100 breaststroke did not count, as her finish was counted as an exhibition. Teammate Kim Abbott led off the 200 relay and won the 200 freestyle in 2:43.60.

The Quakers conclude the dual-meet portion of its schedule next Saturday (1/31) at 1:00 when Randolph-Macon College and Randolph College visit the Guilford College Pool for an ODAC double-dual meet. Hollins hosts league-rivals Bridgewater College, Sweet Briar College and nonconference-foe Greensboro College in a quad meet Wednesday (1/28) at 7:00 p.m.
