Great Salt Lake Marathon Fills Up

GREAT SALT LAKE, Utah. January 3. HOW times are changing.

Registration opened for the Great Salt Lake Open Water Marathon Swim opened up at precisely 12:00 midnight on New Year's day 2012. Between the two events (1 mile and 8 miles), the longer marathon swim filled up in less than two days.

The 8-mile race is capped at 12 swimmers, but last year it took 6 weeks to fill up. Race director Gordon Gridley explains, "With extreme swimming being the buzz lately, I think swimming in the Great Salt Lake qualifies as being extreme. That appeals to a lot of people. We are awaiting approval from the Utah State Parks to expand the field of swimmers to possibly 15. And if that approval is granted, expect that it will quickly be snatched up as well."
