The Gold squad came away with a 104-86 victory over the Black squad at the University of Iowa swimming and diving annual intrasquad meet Saturday morning at the UI Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.

“They’ve been working hard in the pool,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “It’s great to see them race and have some fun. They really love it and there is a long tradition with this. It also allows them to get introduced to the scoring system and things like that. We really enjoyed it and it’s always a lot of fun.”

The Black team jumped off to an early lead winning both the women’s and men’s 200-medley relay. Seniors Jo Jekel, Shea Hoyt, Mekenna Scheitlin, and Junior Kelly McNamara posted a 1:44.13 victory. The men’s team comprised of juniors Kenneth Mende, Michal Brzus and sophomores Weston Credit and Will Scott touched in at 1:30.66 to solidify their win.

However, the Gold squad fought back winning a total of 12 events on the day. Sophomore Allyssa Fluit notched multiple individual victories on the day, first winning the 200-freestyle (1:51.80), followed by a victory in the 100-free (51.45).

The highlights of Saturday for the Gold team included a first place finish from senior Will Brenner in the men’s 50-diver freestyle touching in at 21:34.

The Gold squad closed out the meet winning the women’s and men’s 200-freestyle relay. Fluit, along with senior Tereysa Lehnertz, freshman Sarah Schemmel, and sophomore Hannah Burvill clocked 1:34.76, while sophomore Joseph Myhre, junior Matt Kamin, and seniors Jerzy Twarowski, and R.J. Hemmingsen touched in at 1:23.96.

The Hawkeyes return to the UI CRWC Natatorium for the 100th anniversary of Iowa swimming and diving hosting Michigan State and Northern Iowa on Oct. 5-6.
