ST. PETERS—Glendale’s Madeline Nelson claimed two first place finishes at Saturday’s Missouri girls high school state championships.

Rock Bridge took gold with 295 points. Glendale was second with 234.5, and Park Hill South finished third with 207.

The 200 IM proved to be an exciting race with Tori Beeler of Park Hill South and Brittany Wen of Hickman battling it out for the first place finish. Wen opened the race with a quick 50 fly split but Beeler was able to catch up and hold a faster pace during the back and breaststroke leaving a race to the finish. Despite Wen having a quicker 50 free split Beeler was able to hold the lead and touch first with a 2:03.65. Wen finished right behind with a 2:03.77.

The championship heat of the 50 free was anyone’s game with the top four finishers all within .05 seconds of each other. Caitlyn Palmer of Jackson took gold with 24.09 while Parkway West’s Kristen Petersen (24.11) managed to slip past Summit Prep’s Molly Moore (24.12) to grab second. Kaylee Sisson of Glendale was fourth with 24.14.

Madeline Nelson of Glendale claimed first in the 100 free with a 52.32. She was followed by Kristen Petersen of Parkway West (52.41) and Lafayette STL’s Franceska Petrosino (52.54).

The 200 freestyle relay proved to be another close race with the top three finishers all touching within .53 seconds of each other. The relay team of Alyssa Juris (25.80), Madison Nguyen (24.19), Jennifer Wood (24.48) and Emma Brabham (23.87) from Francis Howell were first with a 1:38.34. Glendale’s Cali Hackworth (25.49), Macie Beairsto (23.84), Audrey Mace (25.01) and Kaylee Sisson (24.11) finished second in 1:38.45. Rock Bridge’s Althea Felton (24.79), Nicole Williams (25.34), Ellie Flanagan (25.29) and Kelley Tackett (23.45) took third with a 1:38.87.

Seniors Madeline Nelson of Glendale and Madison Strathman of Kearney’s quick dash to the finish in the 100 breaststroke ended in a tie with both girls touching in 1:05.03. Nelson led in the first 50 splitting a 30.53 compared to Strathman’s 30.69, but Strathman’s 34.34 was able to catch up to Nelson’s 34.50 to tie the race.
