Giulia Oliveira Carvalho Sprints to South American Short-Course Butterfly Record

Brazilian swimmer Giulia Oliveira Carvalho knocked off a 12-year old South American short-course record last week.

Swimming at the XXVI Swimming Super Cup, Carvalho raced to a 25.18 time in the 50-meter butterfly on July 10.

The previous mark was set by Brazil’s Daynara de Paula in 2014 at 25.54.

Carvalho swims for Arezzo Minas in Brazil.

Earlier this year, she led her club to the Brazil Swimming Trophy, formerly the Maria Lenk Trophy, by winning the club championships in May.

Here is what she had to say about her team during the competition.

“It was an emotional competition,” Carvalho wrote on social media. “I was a Brazilian champion, I celebrated the victories of my friends, I cried with the results that weren’t even mine (both good and bad), I experienced the thrill of being point to point with another team and much more. It’s a very long and exhausting competition, but it all becomes a lot easier when you have a technical team that believes in your dreams and celebrates you ever 0.01 of their time, or is there when you’re at your lowest point, helping you up. … please know that I will work harder and harder to conquer new dreams
