Gettysburg vs. McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Maryland, November 10.GETTYSBURG's men's team set pool records in both relays and the Bullets improved to 3-0 on both sides, sweeping host McDaniel College Wednesday evening in a Centennial Conference swimming meet.

The men's team earned a 61-24 victory while the women, which received another triple-win effort from freshman Cooper Kearns (West Hartford, Conn./Miss Porter's School), prevailed 61-33. Both teams are now 2-0 in the conference.

In the first men's event of the night, freshman Mike Harmon (Shippensburg, Pa./home-schooled), senior Roger Nawrocki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional), senior Tom Everett (Timonium, Md./McDonogh School), and freshman Stu Cubbison (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) broke the Harlow Pool record with a winning time of 1:37.98. The Bullets would go on to win each of the final 10 events of the night, led by victories in the 50-free (21.66) and 100-free (49.09) by freshman Jason Potter (New Canaan, Conn./Canaan).

Other individual winners were senior Drew Close (Berwyn, Pa./Haverford School) in the 1,000-free (10:53.17, exhibition event), freshman Ashton Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) in the 200-free (1:48.64), Harmon in the 400-IM (4:21.58), Everett in the 100-fly (53.84), sophomore Adam Weinbrom (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the 100-back (56.35), sophomore Sean Staerk (Abington, Pa./Abington) in the 500-free (5:04.12), and Nawrocki in the 100-breast (1:01.59, exhibitioned).

The Bullet men closed the evening with an exclamation mark, as the all-freshman quartet of Potter, Cubbison, Harmon, and Leyens blasted through the exhibitioned 200-free relay in 1:25.94, smashing the former mark of 1:28.51 set by a Gettysburg team in 1998.

Kearns, who also won three events against Washington on Saturday, paced the women's team with victories in the 1,000-free (11:00.97), the 200-free (2:02.29), and the 500-free (5:32.22). Junior Caroline Coolidge (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) was a double-winner, capturing the 400-IM (4:57.90) and the 100-free (56.05).

Senior Mariesa Slaughter (Harrisonville, Mo./Harrisonville) added a win in the 100-fly (1:02.08) while junior Brooke Lacey (Darien, Conn./Darien) claimed the exhibitioned 100-breast in 1:12.84.

In the relays, senior Kayte Demont (Cumberland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy), Lacey, Slaughter, and freshman Kara VanBlargan (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) won the 200-medley in 1:56.60 while the foursome of Coolidge, freshman Haley Weaver (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), VanBlargan, and sophomore Ali Roth (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) touched first in the exhitioned 200-free, clocking a 1:42.77.

The women's team picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it hosts Bryn Mawr College in another Centennial Conference meet starting at 1 p.m. The men's team does not compete until Nov. 19, when it visits Ursinus College along with the women's team in a CC match-up.
