Duke Splits With Georgia Tech in Quad With Michigan, Indiana

Two ACC teams took on two BIG 10 teams today in Atlanta, Georgia, as Georgia Tech hosted Duke, Michigan, and Indiana. The Michigan women beat Georgia Tech 228-72 and Duke 195-105, and Indiana beat both Georgia Tech 227-73 and Duke 190-110. The Blue Devil women won over Georgia Tech 198-101. On the men’s side, Michigan beat Georgia Tech 212.5-85.5 and Duke 212-86 as Indiana also beat Georgia Tech 212.5-87.5 and Duke 198-102. Georgia Tech defeated Duke 165-135.

The Blue Devils’ 200 medley relay team of Kazumu Takabayaski, Peter Kropp, David Armstrong, and James Peek took second in 1:27.96, less than .1 behind Michigan. Takabayashi went on to claim third in the 100 back (49.00) and Kropp placed second in the 100 breast (54.71), followed by teammate Dylan Payne (55.14). Verity Abel took third in the women’s 1000 (10:03.92), and freshman Maddie Hess took second in the 100 back (54.97). Maddie Rusch came in second in the 50 free in 23.21, while Peek (20.09) took third in the men’s event. Leah Goldman touched second in the 200 fly (1:59.84) and won the 100 fly (54.07) as teammate Isa Paez took third (55.43).

Georgia Tech’s Moises Loschi posted his team’s highest finish of the meet, tying for first in the men’s 200 breast (1:59.63). Ben Southern claimed third in the 200 fly (1:47.48). Iris Wang swam to second in the women’s 100 free (50.38), and teammate Lizzie Devitt swam to second in the 200 IM (2:01.73). The meet concluded with Georgia Tech’s 400 free relay team of Rodrigo Correia, Mark Keaveney, Youssef Hammoud, and Noah Harasz taking third in 3:01.01.

Two Blue Devil freshman each won a diving event: Evan Moretti claimed first in the men’s 1m (313.40) and Mack Willborn won the women’s 3m (292.30). Georgia Tech’s Shannon Lumbra (247.10) and Brad Homza (276.35) both dove to third in the women’s and men’s 1m, respectively. Homza placed second in the men’s 3m (309.05) as Moretti took third (296.80), and Duke diver Mary Targonski placed second in the women’s 1m (264.30).

Georgia Tech takes on Alabama next weekend, and the Blue Devils compete against ACC rival North Carolina on January 30.
