Georgia Tech Tops Emory as Max Fowler Breaks Diving Record

Senior diver Max Fowler broke his own 1-meter session program record during Georgia Tech’s season-opening dual-meet victories over Emory on Saturday morning at McAuley Aquatic Center.

The reigning ACC Diver of the Meet opened his 2026-27 account in resounding fashion as he controlled the 3-meter session, totaling up to a 421.58 final score. Only three other Georgia Tech divers have scored more points in a 3-meter session.

Fowler steamed through the 1-meter session, building a 217.35 score through three dives before landing his inward 2 1/2 somersault tuck to score 76.73 points, his highest-scored dive of the day. He landed three 75+ point dives and finished with a 419.18 score, a new program record.

Georgia Tech controlled the meet from the opening event, winning 29 of the 32 events. Tech placed first in 25 swimming events and won all four diving sessions. The men’s team secured a 206-90 victory with the women’s squad scoring 192 points to Emory’s 105.

Freshman Kerem İlyem had a strong debut, sweeping both the 100 and 200 breast races and notching a top-10 program time in the 200 breast event. His time of 1:57.45 makes him the 10th-fastest Tech swimmer in the discipline in only his first collegiate swim.

Fowler and İlyem were just two of seven athletes to secure multiple event wins on the day. Leo Verschooten controlled the 50 and 100 free events as Hailey Dopson won both the women’s 500 and 1000 free races. Freshman George Groves notched 200 and 500 free victories with Zara Masud placing first in both the 200 free and 100 fly races. Freshman Meriç Uygun secured 200 breast and 200 IM wins after taking three event wins in last week’s intrasquad meet.

Three divers set new Georgia Tech top-10 records as Lizzie Powley broke the 300-point mark with a 306.53 score in the 1-meter, now standing at seventh in Tech history. Elijah Klier now stands at ninth all-time on the 3-meter Tech leaderboard at 371.03 after breaking the platform school record last season. Betsy Parker settled into the 1-meter Tech record book in her competitive debut, scoring 299.85 to lock up 10th all-time.

Georgia Tech will next compete in the Seminole Fall Classic from October 9-10 in Tallahassee, Florida, before hosting its second-annual Dual Meet Tournament from October 16-17.
