Georgia Invitational Provides Fast Times

ATHENS, Georgia, December 1. GEORGIA's men's swimming and diving team is first and the women's team is second after one day of the UGA Fall Invitational being held at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

In Friday's competition, the Bulldogs rolled up 293 points to take the top spot over Southern Cal (232). On the women's side, Cal is first with 315 and the Lady Bulldogs have 293.

"It was a good day of work," said Georgia head swimming coach Jack Bauerle. "There were some real good swims all around. I'm really confident with our team effort today. It was a great start to the weekend."

"There was some good competition tonight," Georgia head diving coach Dan Laak said. "Both our women and our guys dove solid. We're looking forward to tomorrow."

For the Bulldogs, Sebastien Rouault won the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA automatic qualifying standard (A-cut) time of 4:16.80. Genya Gouzeev took first on the 1-meter springboard, scoring 330.30 points. In the prelims, he recorded a zone qualifying score of 343.30. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cameron Hollinger, Michael Cellini, Gil Stovall and Joe Smutz posted a B-cut time of 1:19.35 in winning the event.

Stovall placed third in the 200-yard individual medley with an NCAA provisional qualifying standard (B-cut) time of 1:48.40. Hollinger posted a B-cut time of 20.14 in the 50-yard freestyle with a third-place finish. Placing second in the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Stovall, Neil Versfeld, Nathan Bibliowicz and Smutz posted a B-cut time of 3:16.48.

For the Lady Bulldogs in the 500-yard freestyle, Claire Maust stopped the clock with an A-cut time of 4:42.44. Anna Miller also recorded an A-cut, finishing second in 4:44.46. Placing 10th, Kristen Frost had a B-cut time of 4:51.35.

Placing fifth in the 200-yard IM, Melissa Klein had a B-cut time of 2:02.81. In the 50-yard freestyle, Anne-Marie Botek (fourth, 23.22) and Miller (fifth, 23.28 in prelims) recorded B-cut times. The 400-yard medley relay team of Aleksandra Putra, Kelly McNichols, Lisa Caprioglio and Jessica Cole placed second with a B-cut time of 3:41.58.
