By Mark Urban

EVANSTON, Ill., April 11. FIFTY-FIVE year-old George Wendt shattered the USMS national record for the men's 55-59 age group in the 1650-yard freestyle at the Illinois Short Course State Championships this past weekend.

Wendt touched in 18:41.32, bettering Sandy Galletly’s old mark of 19:01.09 from May 15, 1999. "I felt really good the whole race," says Wendt. "My taper hit just right."

This is Wendt’s second national record of 2003. He previously lowered the 400 IM mark on February 16 by almost four seconds. Wendt trains with Chicago Masters under Head Coach Paul Moniak.
