From Club to College: Racer X Aquatics’ Lizzie Smeltzer, Baily Trettel Lend In-State Verbals to St. Francis

NEW COMMITS: St. Francis University of Pennsylvania has received two verbal commitments for the 2021-22 season and beyond from in-state club teammates Lizzie Smeltzer of North Huntingdon, Pa. and Baily Trettel of Slippery Rock, Pa.

Both talented swimmers currently train year-round with Racer X Aquatics.

LIZZIE SMELTZER

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue both my athletic and academic career at Saint Francis University!! I’m beyond thankful for all of my family, friends, coaches, and teammates who have supported me along this journey!  I can’t wait for the next 4 years!  Go red flash!!”

Primarily a breaststroker and IMer, Smeltzer most recently finished fifth in the 200 breast and sixth in the 400 IM at the Allegheny Mountain Junior Olympics in March. In summer 2019, she had three top-10 finishes at the TPIT Junior Olympics before going on to race three events at Eastern Zone Seniors.

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:10.34
  • 200 breast – 2:26.81
  • 400 IM – 4:42.18
  • 200 free – 1:58.23
  • 500 free – 5:13.33

Also competing for Norwin Senior, Smeltzer has competed at the WPIAL AAA Championships the last three years. As a junior, she placed 11th in the 500 free after taking 15th in that event during her sophomore season.

BAILEY TRETTEL

She told Swimming World:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue both my academic and athletic career at Saint Francis University!! I couldn’t have done this without my family, friends, coaches, and teammates! I am so grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait for the next 4 years! GO RED FLASH!!⚡️”️

A talented backstroker, Trettel recorded four best times at the Allegheny Mountain Junior Olympics and placed 18th in the 200 back at the TPIT Christmas Invitational in December. She placed fifth in the 200m back and seventh in the 100m back at the TPIT Junior Olympics last summer and notched a PB at Geneva Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 28.08
  • 100 back – 59.23
  • 200 back – 2:07.49
  • 50 fly – 28.42
  • 100 fly – 59.52

Currently a senior at Moniteau High School, Trettel raced both the 100 fly and the 100 back at the Pennsylvania 2A State Championships during her junior campaign. She won both of those events at the PIAA District 9 Championships two weeks prior as well.
