Fresno State Adds Taryn Ignacio as Head Diving Coach

FRESNO, California, July 31. TARYN Ignacio will join head coach Jeanne Fleck and assistant Ryan Purdy to complete the swimming and diving coaching staff as she was named the new head diving coach this week. Ignacio, a former All-American diver at Kentucky, will coach four divers at Fresno State in the 2008-09 season.

Ignacio was the Interim Head Coach at the University of Kentucky last season after the head coach Mike Lyden, who spent 16 seasons as the coach of the diving program at Kentucky, passed away in early April after a long battle with cancer.

"I feel very honored to be hired and be a part of the Fresno State swimming and diving team," Ignacio said. "I'm really excited for the upcoming year and I'm ready to build the program and put Fresno on the map."

The native from Richmond, Ky., was an individual National Champion at Kentucky in 2006 on the platform event, the first-ever NCAA Champion for the Wildcats. Ignacio was also a five-time SEC Champion, in the one- meter twice, both her sophomore and senior seasons and on the platform all three years she was at Kentucky (2004-07).

She is the University of Kentucky record holder in both the one-meter and platform events and the SEC and NCAA record holder on the platform.
Ignacio was just the second diver in SEC history to three-peat on the platform and was named the SEC Female Diver of the Year all three seasons.

Prior to diving at Kentucky, Ignacio spent one season at Florida State where she qualified for the NCAA's as a freshman. She also took 11th on the platform at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Ignacio was not only a successful diver but a successful young coach.
In 2007, she coached one women's All-American on the one-meter and one male freshman to All-American status on the one-meter as well.

"I feel that Taryn will bring enthusiasm, excitement and quality to our program from the get-go," said Fleck. "I heard rave reviews from the top diving coaches in the country on her. She has all of the ingredients to make a great coach and she has the tools to coach all three diving events."

Special thanks to Fresno State for contributing this report.
