French Short Course Championships: Day One Finals Features Five French Records

NIMES, France, December 7. THE French Short Course Championships opened up with a swift start at the meet held in Nimes, France. Overall, five French records met their demise during the initial day of swimming at the event.

Three records witnessed new national records on the women's side. Anne Sophie Le Paranthoen lowered her own 100 breast 2005 standard of 1:08.04 by becoming the first woman hailing from France under 1:08 with a winning time of 1:07.42.

Meanwhile, Diane Bui Duyet clocked a 57.80 in the women's 100 fly to drop under 58 and wipe out Alena Popchanka's 2005 national record of 58.27.

In one of the closest races of the evening, Sophie De Ronchi joined Laure Manaudou under De Ronchi's national record of 1:00.81 in the 100 IM. De Ronchi, however, won out with a time of 1:00.34 against Manaudou's 1:00.68.

For the men, Antoine Galavtine surpassed his French record in the 100 IM of 53.76 set earlier this year when he hit the wall with a time of 53.07 to win the national title tonight.

Benjamin Stasiulis and Pierre Roger went head-to-head in the 200 back as both crushed the previous national standard of 1:54.14 held by Simon Dufour since 2002. The duo vaulted right past the 1:54 and 1:53 marks as Stasiulis won in 1:52.11, with Roger touching just behind in 1:52.49.

Meanwhile, Malia Metella and Alain Bernard set their respective 50 freestyle meet records as Metella won from the women's field in 24.75, while Bernard notched a quick time of 21.24.

Gabrielle Fagundez won the 800 free in 8:19.28, while Alexiane Castel took home the 200 back title in 2:06.67 to complete event winners for the women, while Nicolas Rostoucher (1500 free – 14:44.83), Hugues Duboscq (100 breast – 59.54) and Amaury Leveaux (100 fly – 52.19) rounded out the men's titlists.
