Frazier, Zalm Tabbed MAC Athletes of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio, November 1. THE Mid-American Conference named Karen Frazier (Miami) and Connor Vander Zalm (Buffalo) as its swimmers of the week for their performances this past weekend.

In her first collegiate meet against Akron, Frazier became the first RedHawk since 2005 to set an individual school swimming record with her Miami varsity record and first-place clocking of 1:04.18 in the 100 breaststroke. Frazier's performance broke the old Miami record of 1:04.20 previously held by four-time MAC Champion Amanda Furlano. With her performance, Frazier additionally broke Furlano's freshman record of 1:04.52. In Miami's two dual meets wins against Akron and Buffalo, Frazier totaled three individual wins and helped Miami extend its streak of Mid-American Conference dual meet wins to 41.

Vander Zalm won an individual race and was part of a winning relay as the Bulls opened the season with a 137-106 victory at Ball State. In his collegiate debut, Vander Zalm won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.16 and anchored the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:12.42. He also placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:58.18. It was UB's first win over Ball State since the 1999-2000 season and broke a string of six losses in season-openers.
