Former High Point Swim Coach Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault Charges

Aaron Philip Key, a High Point, North Carolina, swim coach pleaded guilty to six felony counts of sexual assault, taking indecent liberties with a child, on Monday in a Guilford County Courthouse, according to news reports.

Key, 28, was arrested in January by the High Point Police Department. According to prosecutors, Key began molesting a 7-year-old boy, who is now 15.

Key is a former High Point Elks Lodge coach who left the position in 2016, according to a team post. It is unknown whether he has coached anywhere since.

According to the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office, Key lived in Raleigh at the time. He became close with the family while coaching the boy. That closeness led to him staying at the family’s home as a chaperone while the boy’s parents were out of town.

Judge Timothy Gould sentenced Key to two consecutive prison terms of 16-to-29 months. Key also was sentenced to four separate probation terms of 16-to-29 months per count. He will likely spend between nearly 3-5 years in prison, with the potential to serve nearly 10 years of probation thereafter.

Key is required to register as a sex offender and pay $75,000 in restitution.
