Florida State’s Scott Baker and Virginia Tech’s Jessica Botzum Earn ACC Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, October 16. FLORIDA State's Scott Baker and Virginia Tech's Jessica Botzum have been selected the season's first Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. The league recognition is also a career first for both student-athletes.

A junior transfer from Lake Mary, Fla., Baker made his debut for the Garnet and Gold clinching nine individual victories and finishing runner-up three times at the Georgia Tech quad meet last Saturday. Florida State posted a 2-1 record, notching wins over the Yellow Jackets (166-134) and Alabama (190-80) with the Seminoles' lone loss to Clemson (151-143). Baker swept the 100 freestyle events and won two of the three races in the 50 free. He also anchored the winning 400 medley relay squad against all three opponents.

Botzum, reigning ACC Swimmer of the Year, kicked off the season with winning performances in five individual events and two relay events to help Virginia Tech defeat South Carolina (176-124) and Clemson (178.5-121.5). The senior from Raleigh, N.C., captured first place in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events as she posted NCAA "B" marks against both teams. She also took first place in the 200 individual medley with a league-leading 2:06.31 time against Clemson, while finishing second in the same race with a 2:07.56 mark versus South Carolina. Botzum also swam the second leg of both the winning 200 medley relay teams during the Hokies' season-opening weekend.
