Flash! Hansen Breaks Own 100 Breast World Record

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 1 BRENDAN Hansen shattered his own world record in the 100-meter breaststroke with a spectacular 59.13 time at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. Hansen went out in .27 seconds under world-record pace with a 27.66 to get the entire crowd behind him as the excitement built throughout his race.

"I wanted the opportunity, just give me a lane and give me a chance," Hansen said. "This whole summer has been real special for me so far. It was just a matter of me putting all the little things together and just having a good race."

Meanwhile, Wyoming's Scott Usher placed second in 1:01.07, while Longhorn's Matthew Lowe snared bronze in 1:01.12.

In the consolation heat, N.C. State’s Dan Velez recorded the fastest 50-meter split in 29.18, before placing second in 1:02.68. Meanwhile, Stanford’s David Ash won in 1:02.63, while Longhorn’s Scott Spann finished third in 1:02.94.

In the bonus consolation heat, Indiana University’s Kevin Swander went out the fastest with a 29.39 50-meter split. Ohio State’s Nathan Cass, however, rolled past him to win in 1:03.10. Meanwhile, Curl Burke Swim Club’s Ryan Hurley took second in 1:03.45, while Swander garnered third in 1:03.58.
