Flanders Swimming Cup: First Day Features Sprint Action

ANTWERP, Belgium, January 11. THE first day of long course swimming at the 2008 Flanders Swimming Cup in Antwerp, Belgium featured plenty of exciting finishes and fast times as the 50-meter distance owned the day.

Anna Gostomelski opened the meet with an incredibly close triumph with a 26.23 in the women's 50 free. She held off Jolien Sysmans (26.25), Martha Matsa (26.27) and Claire Hedenskog (26.34).

Elise Matthysen pocketed the women's 50 breast title with a time of 32.87, finishing ahead of Jolij Van Valklengoed's second-place 33.29, while Silke Van Hoof claimed the women's 50 back in 30.11 with Gostomelski placing second in 30.40.

Kimberly Buys closed out women's racing with a close win in the 50 fly. She touched in 27.86, just beating Gostomelski's second-place 27.94.

Gino Stevenheydens claimed the men's 50 fly with a time of 25.24, holding off Nikoloas Xylouris (25.31) in the race, while Bruno Claeys hit the wall in 26.46 in the men's 50 back, with Ioannis Kokkodis taking second in 26.91.

Tryfonas Trivizas earned first place in the men's 50 breast (28.95), while Shai Livnat touched out Stavros Kirmitzoglou, 23.65 to 23.69, in the men's 50 free.
