FINA World Short Course Championships: Rebecca Soni Charts American, Meet Record in 100 Breast Victory

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 18. USA's Rebecca Soni started off the fourth day right with an American and meet record in the women's 100 breast at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Soni posted a 1:03.98 in the finale for the win, downing her American and meet record of 1:04.17 set during prelims. That time, however, is not her lifetime best as she clocked the world record with a 1:02.70 at the Duel in the Pool last year. USA Swimming does not recognize the global standard as its national record because it had already enacted a domestic techsuit ban in Oct. 2009, even though FINA recognized techsuit swims until its worldwide ban on Jan. 1, 2010.

Australia's Leisel Jones raced to second in 1:04.26, while China's Ji Liping posted a third-place 1:04.79 to complete the podium.

Denmark's Rikke Moeller Pedersen (1:04.80), Sweden's Jennie Johansson (1:05.31), Australia's Sarah Katsoulis (1:05.43), Russia's Yuliya Efimova (1:05.50) and The Netherlands' Moniek Nijhuis (1:05.99) also vied for the championships title.
