FINA World Short Course Championships: Ariana Kukors Backhalves Way to 100 IM Title

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 17. WORLD-record holder Hinkelien Schreuder paced the field during the front half, but USA’s Ariana Kukors made up the difference in the breaststroke and closed out the women’s 100 IM victory in the freestyle leg at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Kukors clocked a winning time of 58.95, short of her American record and top-ranked time of 58.65 posted during prelims. Australia’s Kotuku Ngawati moved up to second with a silver-winning time of 59.27, short of her second-ranked season best of 59.18 from earlier in the meet.

Schreuder rounded out the podium-winners with a third-place 59.53. She also has been much faster this year with a third-ranked 59.29 from the Berlin stop of the World Cup.

Estonia’s Jane Trepp (59.85), Germany’s Theresa Michalak (59.97), Hungary’s Evelyn Verraszto (1:00.19), USA’s Missy Franklin (1:00.75) and Italy’s Francesca Segat (1:01.29) also swam in the finale.
