Katinka Hosszu of Hungary enters the women’s 50 backstroke preliminaries as the top seed with a time of 26.13, but will receive competition from fellow backstroker’s Daryna Zevina, Emily Seebohm, Hilary Caldwell and Kylie Masse.
Fresh off a world record in the 100 butterfly South African Chad le Clos could be looking to challenge the records of the 50 butterfly. Le Clos’ seed time is a 22.06, but he owns the championship record with a 21.95 from 2014.
Hosszu will have a short rest between the 50 backstroke and the 400 freestyle as she enters as the top seed with a 3:58.84. Leah Smith, the new champion in the 800 free, will provide strong competition as she hunts for a second championship medal.
Alia Atkinson of Jamaica and Lilly King will gear up for a second showdown in prelims of the women’s 100 breaststroke as the two enter as the top two seeds.
