FINA Men’s Water Polo World League Second Round: Romania, Italy Score Victories

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, December 19. ITALY and Romania are the only teams with two victories at the end of the second round of the European matches of the 2012 edition of the FINA Men's Water Polo World League. The games of this round took place in Manchester (GBR) and Oradea (ROU) on December 6, 2011 and in Berlin (GER) and Athens (GRE) on December 17, 2011.

In Group A, Italy did not find special difficulties to overcome Great Britain, winning by a convincing 14-6. After its comfortable win over Russia on Round 1, the World Champions now lead the group with six points, while the British and Russians will play in Kirishi (RUS) in the third round of this group on January 11, 2012.

In Group B, Germany managed to triumph over the team of FYR Macedonia by 8-5 and is the provisional leader of the group, with four points (one win and one loss by penalties). The favourite Croatia had a bye this round and will play against the Macedonians on January 5, 2012.

On Group C, with four teams, Romania got its second victory of the season, this time in a thrilling game against Spain (9-8). This gives the Romanians the provisional lead with six points, while Spain and Greece are tied with three points (one win and one loss each). The success of the Hellenics was achieved in Athens, against Turkey (victory of the home team by 14-5). The Turkish now accumulate two losses in two matches played so far.

GROUP A: 1. ITA, 6 pts (2 wins); 2. GBR, 0 (1 loss); 3. RUS, 0 (1L)
GROUP B: 1. GER, 4 pts (1W, 1L); 2. CRO, 2 (1W); 3. MKD, 0 (1L)
GROUP C: 1. ROU, 6 pts (2W); 2. ESP, 3 (1W, 1L); 3. GRE, 3 (1W, 1L); 4. TUR, 0 (2L)

Next round:
Group A: RUS-GBR (January 11, 2012)
Group B: MKD-CRO (January 5, 2012)
Group C: TUR-ROU (January 5, 2012) & GRE-ESP (January 7, 2012)
