FINA Masters World Marks Broken at Colonies Zone Championships

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 12. MIKE Ross led the charge as more than a dozen FINA Masters world records were bettered last weekend at the 2008 Masters SCM Colonies Zone Championship.

Ross, 40 years old representing Maine Masters, started the meet with the 100 free, breaking the one-day-old world record of 51.17 set by Erik Hochstein at the Southern Pacific SCM meet in California. Ross swam the event in 50.43 to set the new mark in the 40-44 age group.

Next, Ross was up in the 200 free, and he demolished Kai Ditzel's world mark of 1:53.03 with a 1:50.08. Ross finished the first day of competition with his third world mark, this time in the 50 fly. Ross' time of 24.91 cleared Hartmut Berner's record of 25.13.

On the second day of competition, Ross set one more world mark in the 100 back, swimming a 54.85 to erase Chris Stevenson's mark of 57.47. Swimming next to Ross, Stevenson also cleared his former record with a 55.90.

Notably, Ross came close to swimming under the listed world record of 23.31 in the 50 free when he swam a 23.47.

Stevenson, 44 of Virginia Masters, swam faster than his own world marks in the 50 and 200 backstrokes with times of 26.56 and 2:04.96, respectively. His former marks were 26.80 and 2:06.11.

In the 50-54 age group, Benn Doyle of Garden State Masters swam under the world record in the 100 breast with a 1:08.27, taking Ronny Oltner's record off the books. He also swam faster than Lorenzo Marugo's world record of 2:33.71 in the 200 breast with a 2:32.78. Doyle came within two-hundredths of Oltner's world record in the 50 breast with a 31.08.

Only one women's world record was beaten at the meet, and it was one of many held by Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen. Laurie DiTommaso took down Pipes-Neilsen's 50 fly record of 29.98 in the 45-49 age group with a 29.21.

Thanks to Benn Doyle for the update.
