FINA Awards 2014 Masters World Championships to Montreal

SHANGHAI, China, July 14. BEFORE the start of the 14th FINA World
Championships, the FINA Bureau held its meeting on July 13-14, 2011 in
Shanghai (CHN). Besides acknowledging the successful figures of these
championships – 2200 athletes from 181 countries (a new record of nations in the
history of the competition), 65 TV networks accredited, TV broadcast in high
definition in over 190 territories, almost 6000 accreditations – the FINA Bureau
designated the host of the 2014 FINA World Masters Championships, which will
take place in Montreal (CAN). The other candidate for the organisation of these
championships – the biggest FINA event in terms of participation – was Buenos
Aires (ARG).

Looking also ahead, the FINA Bureau was informed about the latest preparation
stages of the upcoming major competitions: the 2012 FINA World Masters
Championships in Riccione (ITA) – the overall programme and the standard entry
times for Swimming were approved -, the 2012 FINA World Swimming
Championships (25m) in Istanbul (TUR), the 2013 FINA World Championships in
Barcelona (ESP), and the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in
Catania (ITA). A report on the 2012 Olympic Games in London (GBR) was also
presented.

For all these events, the FINA Bureau members were briefed about the plans for
venues, accommodation and transportation, marketing and PR activities, and
facilities for media.

On July 15, 2011 the FINA Bureau will decide on the host of the FINA World
Championships in 2015, and eventually 2017. The three candidates to stage these
competitions are Guadalajara (MEX), Hong Kong (HKG) and Kazan (RUS). A
FINA Press Conference to announce the winner(s) will be staged at the main
Press Conference Room of the Oriental Sports Centre at 13h00 (local time).
