FINA Announces Record Number of European Viewers for World Championships

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, November 9. FOR the first time in the history of the FINA World Championships, the cumulative TV audience in Europe (according to the final report from EBU) for the latest edition of the competition, from July 17-August 2, 2009 in Rome (ITA) reached almost 1.5 billion viewers. These figures demonstrate the increasing value of the main FINA product and confirm the success of the FINA sports on the TV screens (the worldwide figures will be available soon).

During the period of the championships, the statistics concerning TV audience in Europe are impressive:
– 1'498'684'619 individuals (cumulative audience);
– 2'470 programmes;
– 1804 hours of transmission;
– 17.8 peak rating.

Moreover, five countries had more than 50 million cumulative TV viewers:
– Italy: 605 million;
– Germany: 271 million;
– France: 254 million;
– Spain: 174 million;
– Great Britain: 87 million.

The Host Broadcaster of these championships was RAI and the TV signal of the competition (in High Definition) was distributed in 196 territories.

The 13th FINA World Championships Rome 2009 had the participation of 2'438 athletes from 172 countries in the five FINA aquatic disciplines (swimming, diving, water polo, synchronised swimming and open water swimming).

The next edition of the FINA World Championships will take place in Shanghai (CHN) from July 16-31, 2011.
