European Junior Championships: Four European Junior Records Set

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, July 9. THE European Junior Championships featured four more continental junior marks taking a tumble during the second day of action.

During prelims, Russia's Daniil Izotov cleared the European junior record with a time of 49.20 in the men's 100 free. Luca Leonardi of Italy, meanwhile, one-upped him in semis with a 48.85. The finale will take place tomorrow.

Silke Lippok of Germany topped the women's 100 free in 55.02 for the European Junior record. Italy's Silvia Di Pietro (55.58) and France's Camille Radou (55.87) completed the podium in the event.

Ukraine's Daryna Zevina rolled to the European Junior standard in the women's 200 back with a 2:10.08, which also beat the Ukrainian record of 2:10.82 set by Iryna Amshenikova back in 2003. Poland's Klaudia Nazieblo took second in 2:13.08, while Germany's Doerte Baumert finished third in 2:13.40.

The German foursome of Julika Niegisch, Juliane Reinhold, Lina Rathsack and Lippok closed the night with a 3:45.27 for the European Junior record in the women's 400 free relay.

In other finals action, Hungary's Gergely Gyurta won the men's 1500 free in 15:14.39. Italy's Alessandro Cuoghi (15:20.52) and Spain's Adrian Mantas Mota finished third in 15:24.32.

Poland's Mirela Olczak followed with a triumphant time in the women's 200 fly with a 2:09.32. Hungary's Boglarka Kapas wound up second in 2:09.84 with Italy's Denise Riccobono completing the top three in 2:10.31.

Marco Fanti Rovetta of Italy snatched the men's 100 back title in 55.55. Hungary's Adam Szilagyi (55.64) and Italy's Stefano Pizzamiglio (55.82) also cleared 56 seconds to finish second and third.

Germany's Christian Vom Lehn earned an easy victory in the men's 200 breast with a time of 2:11.07. Russia's Maxim Shcherbakov finished a second behind with a second-place 2:12.83. Greece's Dimitrios Koulouris rounded out the podium with a third-place 2:14.68.

The Netherlands' Sharon Van Rouwendaal picked up the women's 400 free title in 4:12.35. Italy's Stefania Pirozzi finished second in 4:13.01, while Great Britain's Ann Morris touched third in 4:14.09.
