The California boys and girls high school state championships kicked off today at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex with several swimmers making multiple appearances in the top eight for events. Crean Lutheran’s Ella Eastin swam an impressive 200 IM in prelims, potentially setting her on track for a national high school record.
After clocking a 1:58.44 in the girl’s 200 IM during prelims, Ella Eastin of Crean Lutheran will be one to watch. While she added onto her original seed time of 1:53.90, a time that is only .08 seconds off the national high school record of 1:53.82, she still leads the competition by two seconds. Karli Thuen of Jserra is currently seeded second with a 2:00.46 but after splitting faster than Eastin on both the fly and free legs of the IM could provide some competition for Eastin.
Palo Alto’s Grace Zhao and Jserra’s Kaitlyn Albertoli will be battling for the top spot tomorrow in the girl’s 50 free. Zhao touched in 22.86 during prelims with Albertoli finishing close behind with a 22.89.
Zhao and Eastin kept it close in prelims for the girl’s 100 breast, but Zhao was able to pull it together in the second 50 to claim the win and the top seed. Zhao touched with a 1:02.09 while Eastin finished in 1:02.11.
Bryce Mefford of Oak Ridge and Liam McCloskey of LaCosta Canyon are seeded first and second going into finals for the boy’s 200 free. Mefford (1:37.48) leads McCloskey (1:37.91) with a slim .43 seconds.
Of the top eight in the boy’s 50 free, all but one are under the 21 second mark. Albert Gwo of Los Altos leads the competition with a 20.08, while Northgate’s Mason Tittle is seeded second with a 20.58.
Mefford is also currently leading the boy’s 100 back. While Mefford is currently seeded with a 48.54, Benjamin Ho of St. Francis is close behind with a 48.91.
Earlier this morning Olivia Rosendahl of Immaculate Heart swept the diving competition with a stunning 517.50 points. Mikaela Lujan of Nevada Union claimed second place with 492.85, while Mimi Lin of Palo Alto finished third with 489.85.
