Eastern Michigan Overtakes Akron, 174-122

AKRON, Ohio, January 21. THE University of Akron swimming and diving team put forth a great effort against Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon at the Ocasek Natatorium, but it wasn't enough as the Zips fell to the 2006 MAC Champions 174-122.

The loss snaps the Zips six-meet home winning streak and puts their record at 7-5 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference.

Freshman Kendall Karchner (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee HS) shined for the Zips in the loss, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 58.51 and later returned take top honors in the 200-yard back, clocking in at 2:06.84.

Cathryn Collins (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head HS) continued to perform at high level, winning the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:54.41. Fellow freshman Kylie Brombrys (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) recorded a collegiate-best time of 58.86 to win the 100-yard butterfly.

Danielle Beland (Ottawa, Ontario/St. Peters HS) kept her undefeated streak intact in butterfly events, winning the 200 in 2:04.45.

The tandem of (Kendall) Karchner, Melissa Young (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover HS/West Chester [Pa.]), (Daneille) Beland and Stephanie Zielinkski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop HS) started the meet off on the right foot for the Zips – missing their season-best time by less than a tenth of a second to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:48.92.

Akron will have one final tune-up before the MAC Championship meet (Feb. 14-18) when Toledo invades the ONAT next Saturday at 1 p.m. EST.
