CHARLESTON, Illinois, October 2. THE Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming squads opened up their schedule unofficially on Friday evening, competing in a Blue/Gray scrimmage meet in the Ray Padovan Pool. Final scores were close as the Gray squad won on the women's side, 79-71, while the Blue team were victorious for the men, 80-75.

"The meet went really well," said EIU head coach Matt Bos. "I'm extremely happy about the way we swam considering how broken down we were."

Bos said that the freshmen really stepped up, putting in some very solid performances, while the upperclassmen swam great, as expected.

Lauren Zillmer had a nice night, winning the 100 and 200 freestyle. "I was most impressed with her 53.8 split on the 400 free relay," said Bos.

Senior Laura Nilsen also had two solid swims in the 200 IM and 100 Back, while senior Kellie Logterman swam an impressive 1:00.74 in the 100 fly.

On the guy's side, freshman Joe Ciliak turned in the 10th fastest performance in school history with a 59.76 in the 100 breast.

Interestingly enough, both the men's and women's meets actually came down to the very last relay. "That made the whole evening really fun," Bos said.

Both squads have another pre-season meet scheduled for Oct. 18, as the 2009-10 squads will battle Panther alumni in their annual meeting on Homecoming weekend. Meet is set to start at 9 am in Ray Padovan Pool.
