Early Birds in Las Vegas Man The Dam

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, March 28. KARA Robertson has put open water swimming on the map in the middle of the American desert.

She is hosting the U.S. Masters Swimming 10K National Open Water Swimming Championships along with a 5K and 1-mile open water swims in Lake Mead.

The championships will be held on May 18th, but early bird registration ends on March 31st. Already swimmers from 16 different states have registered for the event.

The 10K is open to all members of U.S. Masters Swimming; there is no need to qualify. The 5K and 1 Mile are open to non U.S. Masters Swimming members for an additional fee. Robertson explains the event, “The 3 races are hosted by Swim Las Vegas that also organizes the Slam the Dam Open Water Swim each October. This will be the first National Open Water Championship ever offered in Nevada.”

With the lure of Las Vegas and the water temperatures expected to be 74?F (23?C), swimmers are coming from all around with different motivations. Susan Kirk from New Jersey tells her story, “I sustained a spiral fracture to my lower leg, torn ligaments around the ankle, and a dislocated ankle back in mid-December. I am finally off of my crutches and have begun physical therapy so I can work on walking again. I'm still in a boot, but I hope to be able to ditch that soon too. I'm back in the pool swimming one-legged with one-legged flip turns, so I am a really looking forward to the open water season and NO walls. And I can't wai t to kick it off in Lake Mead.”

Robertson adds, “Participants will get silicone swim caps, race shirt, age group awards, a free massage at packet pickup and the finish line from Massage Envy and a Cupcake from Caked Las Vegas for all finishers.”
