Eagles First Heading Into Final Day

YPSILANTI, Michigan, February 16. THE Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team remained atop the standings after the third day of competition at the 2007 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships here Friday night at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles lead the pack with a 421 score followed by Ohio 413 and Miami 280 1/2. Madeleine Pilchard claimed her fourth championship of the meet, winning the 200-yard freestyle in MAC and meet record time.

In the opening event, Ohio's Ashley Marion claimed the top spot in the 400-yard IM in 4:25.72. Chantelle Lonsdale finished second for the Eagles, clocking in at 2:27.45, followed by Ball State's Mary Brinkoetter (4:28.15). Leeza Moser finished eighth for EMU (4:31.33).

Akron's Danielle Beland edged out Miami's Kathyrn Stephens by 00.01 to win the 100-yard butterfly in 56:57. Toledo's Makenzie Manard finished third in 56.91.

Four Eagles placed in the top-eight during the 200-yard freestyle race, with Pilchard setting a MAC and meet record with a 1:47.95 mark, also an NCAA B consideration time. Toledo's Brie Henning (1:49.74) finished second followed by Ohio's Ilse Petersen (1:50.58). Alissa Ricard (1:50.96) finished fourth, Hannah Burandt (1:52.10) placed fifth and Steph Cholyk (1:53.45) finished eighth for EMU.

Karen Frazier from Miami won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.70) followed by teammate Kristen Bezier (1:04.12)). Akron's Melissa Young (1:04.79) touched the wall third. EMU's Ashley Durand (1:05.12) and Sheila Carson (1:05.33) finished fifth and sixth respectively for the Eagles.

Emily Wylam from Ohio took home championship honors in the 100-yard backstroke with a 56.22 clip. Akron's Kendall Karchner (56.60) finished second followed by Miami's Malarie Schmidt (57.17) in third place.

The RedHawks closed out the day by claiming the 400-yard medley relay in 3:48.10. Ohio (3:48.87) finished second, with EMU's team of Pilchard, Durand, Jennifer Miller and Catherine Lee Ha finished third in 3:48.97.

The events for the final day of competition (Feb. 17) include the three-meter dive, 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay. The preliminary round will begin at 11 a.m. with finals slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Jones Natatorium. The final awards ceremony is set to begin at 9:15 p.m.
