Duke Blue Devils Add Ben Grafchik to Coaching Staff

DURHAM, North Carolina, October 4. DUKE swimming & diving head coach Dan Colella has announced the addition of Ben Grafchik to the Blue Devil coaching staff. A four-year letterwinner at North Carolina, Grafchik joins the Duke program as an assistant coach after most recently serving as an assistant with the Lakeside Seahawks club team in Louisville, Ky.

“We're thrilled to have Ben Grafchik working with us this year,” Colella said. “To have a coach of his caliber — someone who is very, very passionate about the sport, someone who trained and competed for UNC, it's great to see he is wanting and willing to work with us. I just think that his experience as both an athlete and a coach are going to be invaluable in helping us really be successful this year.”

During his time in Louisville, Grafchik helped Lakeside earn Gold Medal club level recognition from USA Swimming and a 10th-place finish in the Club Excellence rankings.

Prior to coaching the Seahawks, Grafchik spent one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Georgetown. The 2010-11 campaign saw him direct the Bulldog men to an eighth-place showing and the women a 10th-place performance at the Big EAST Championships. Grafchik also previously served as the head swimming coach at Northern Durham High School from 2007-09, where he guided current Blue Devil Adam Flur to all-conference honors and a state title in the 50-yard freestyle.

Grafchik closed out his collegiate career ranked in the top 10 in North Carolina history in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. He also advanced to six finals events at the ACC Swimming & Diving Championships during his career and was a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection. Grafchik graduated from North Carolina with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science in 2007. He went on to earn a master's degree in Sports Management at Georgetown.
