Division III Heidelberg University to Add Men’s and Women’s Swimming in 2023-24

Heidelberg University, a Division III school in Ohio, will add men’s and women’s swimming for the 2023-24 academic year, it announced on Thursday.

Athletic Director Greg Cooper made the announcement of adding swimming, to go with esports.

“We are excited to welcome three new teams and two new sports to Heidelberg,” Cooper said in a university press release.  “Our administration has identified these sports as opportunities for strategic growth for the university.”

Heidelberg will compete in the Ohio Athletic Conference, the sixth team to sponsor swimming. (Among them is John Carroll, which finished ninth at the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships.) They will bring Heidelberg’s total to 23 varsity programs.

Heidelberg will swim out of Tiffin YMCA. The university used to have a varsity program in the early 1980s, and it has sponsored a vibrant club team in the decades since.

“Men’s and Women’s Swimming will fit in well here with the proximity to an already existing high-quality facility and the number of schools in and around the area that already sponsor the sport,” Cooper said. “The access to excellent competition was also a factor as it is an OAC-sponsored sport.”
