Denver Picks Up Verbal Commitment from Backstroker Haley Chesno of Phoenix Swim Club

NEW COMMIT: The University of Denver has picked up a new verbal commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Scottsdale, Az. native Haley Chesno.

She will join Jessica Maeda and Mia Moulden as a member of the Pioneers’ Class of 2025.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic studies and athletic career, swimming Division 1 at The Univerity of Denver! I would like to thank my family, friends, and coaches for all believing in me and helping me accomplish my goals! so excited for the next 4 years as a pioneer! #gopios”

A talented backstroker, Chesno is a Futures qualifier who swims year-round with Phoenix Swim Club and most recently placed eighth in the 200 back at the Arizona Senior Open in February. In summer 2019, she raced seven events at Mount Hood Sectionals.

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 27.93
  • 100 back – 58.34
  • 200 back – 2:05.00
  • 200 IM – 2:09.55
  • 100 free – 53.25

Also competing for Arcadia High School, Chesno placed fifth in the 100 free and sixth in the 200 IM as a junior at the Arizona DII State Championships. During her sophomore season, she also competed at the Arizona Meet of Champions where she finished ninth in the 100 back.

When she arrives on campus next year, Chesno will join a young but talented backstroke training group that includes Natalie ArkySophia Nosack, and Gaby Antonini. Under head coach Alicia Hicken-Franklin, Denver swept their seventh-straight Summit League Championships last season.
